Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he could not understand Russian brutality during its invasion of Ukraine and immediately asked for additional help from the United States and its allies to resist Russian attacks.
“We do not understand [the Russians]”Zelenskyy said in an interview with 60-minute correspondent Scott Peli, two days after visiting Bucha, where the bodies of civilians lay in the streets after Russian forces withdrew from the area around Kiev. “You can’t really understand this world, that there are people on this planet who give these orders and people [who carry them out]. ”
“Death. Only death “, said Zelenski about what he saw in Buca, adding that the bodies were” left as garbage “.
Despite Zelensky’s repeated requests for a no-fly zone, the United States and its allies refused, saying it could lead to a direct military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed forces – the United States and Russia.
“I remember, we all remember, a book about the Second World War and about the devil in uniform – Adolf Hitler,” Zelenski said. “Are those countries that did not take part in the war responsible?” Countries that let German forces march across Europe? Is the world responsible for genocide? Yes. It is. [have the ability to] close the sky – yes, it’s scary that a world war could start. That’s terrible. I understand [that]. And I can’t put pressure on those people because everyone is afraid of war. But do the world [is responsible] for this, I believe, yes. I believe so.
“Every day you stand in front of a mirror and ask yourself if you could have done something? Or you were not able to do something? You will find the answer in the mirror to this question, and to another question – who are you? That’s what I believe in.”
Zelenskyy warned that not doing more for Ukraine now means Russia could “get closer and closer to Europe”.
“They’re just going to get stronger and less predictable,” he said.
Zelensky said Ukraine needs more sanctions imposed on Russia and more military aid than its allies, who should be less afraid of Putin.
“Weapons, number one. They have to be very serious about it. They definitely understand what I’m talking about right now. They have to deliver weapons to Ukraine as if to defend themselves and their people. They have to understand this: If they don’t speed up, it will be very difficult for us this pressure. The second factor is sanctions.Because we have found in sanctions some things that are easy for financial experts to circumvent.Russia has been circumventing them, and that is the absolute truth. The Western world knows it.This should not be allowed. This is not a movie, This is real life. Stop being afraid of the Russian Federation. We have shown that we are not afraid. “
Zelenski’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, told Pelley that he had asked the Biden administration for heavier weapons – tanks and jets – and that they be delivered quickly.
“If we get this support on time, we will win,” Yermak said.
A White House official said in 60 minutes that Yermak had received a “yes” to his demands, but it took time to fulfill those orders. Ukrainians also need Russian-made weapons that they already know how to use.
Russia, meanwhile, is escalating its attacks in the east and south.
“We think this will be a new wave of this war. We don’t know how much [Russian weaponry] it will be there. But we understand that there will be many times more of them than there are now, “Zelenskyy said.[All] depends on [how fast] the United States will help us. To be honest, will we be able to [survive] depends on this. I have 100% confidence in our people and our armed forces. But, unfortunately, I do not have confidence that we will get everything we need. ”
Zelenskyy said the Ukrainian security service intercepted communications from Russian soldiers who were talking to their parents about “what they stole and who they abducted” while gathering evidence of alleged war crimes. There are footage of Russian prisoners of war “who confessed to killing people” and had “maps with civilian targets for bombing.”
“Investigations are also being conducted into the remains of the dead,” he said.
Asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin should be prosecuted for war crimes, Zelenskyy said “everyone who made the decision, who issued the order, who complied with the order, everyone who is relevant to this, I believe everyone is guilty.” He added that he believes Putin is “one” of those responsible.
There are few who expected Ukraine to keep Russia for so long. Zelenskyy is not yet ready to say what victory looks like, but he cited the courage of his people as the reason why he believes his country will win the war.
“We are united as a nation. Still [our people] they realized that they would be ten times overpowered and that there would be no way out. There’s just no way out. We fought for our existence and for our survival. It is the united heroism of all – the people, the government, the armed forces. We have become a unique song. ”
