You need to make a separate plan for magazine and newspaper subscriptions. For years, Amazon has had readers covered with Kindle Newsstand, a digital newsstand for publications including magazines and newspapers.
But Amazon has discontinued the Kindle Newsstand, so you’ll have to get your publications elsewhere. See below for why.
Amazon discontinues Kindle Newsstand
Amazon has made the Kindle Newsstand for digital and print magazine and newspaper subscriptions. After March 9, 2023, Kindle publications will no longer be available for subscription. Amazon notified subscribers in an Amazon post.
Effective March 9, 2023, Amazon will no longer sell print, Kindle magazine and newspaper subscriptions.
In addition to the post, Amazon notified Kindle Newsstand subscribers of the change via email. Readers who wish to continue subscribing will need to maintain their subscriptions separately, but the experience will not be the same. The magazine or newspaper must be read on the relevant website or designated app. And you know what that means – more apps to manage and clog your iPad or phone.
Part of the appeal of Kindle Newsstand is the convenience of managing all your favorite subscriptions in one place. All you have to do is pull your Amazon Kindle off the nightstand and browse the latest news. also helps. But the benefits don’t end there. Magazines and newspapers are optimized for Kindle just like e-books.
So what does this mean for Amazon Kindle Newsstand users? Take note of the timeline below.
- As of March 9, 2023, Amazon is no longer accepting subscription orders and renewals for Kindle Newsstand and print magazines.
- Amazon will manage all current print magazine subscriptions until June 5, 2023 at 11:59 PM PST. After that, you will need to manage via the relevant publisher from June 6, 2023 unless you cancel.
- Amazon Kindle Newsstand monthly subscriptions are handled differently. Publications can be received until September 4, 2023. Subscriptions cannot be renewed through Amazon, but publications already received will be retained.
- For Amazon Kindle Newsstand annual subscriptions, Amazon will ship as usual by 11:59 PM PST on September 4, 2023, or the subscription end date, whichever comes first. Just like a monthly subscription to Amazon Kindle Newsstand, you can keep the issues you’ve already received.
Why I Think Amazon Has Done The Kindle Newsstand
Amazon hasn’t said why it’s discontinuing the Kindle Newsstand, so we can only speculate on its decision. Most disturbingly, perhaps Amazon wants readers to use Amazon Kindle Unlimited. This is a monthly eBook subscription for Kindle that includes several digital magazine and newspaper subscriptions.
There is reason to believe this could be the case. Amazon’s post announcing the retirement of Kindle Newsstand points readers in the direction of Amazon Kindle Unlimited. Contains the question “How do I subscribe to Kindle Unlimited (KU)?” In the questions and answers section. Answers include a link to the Amazon Kindle Unlimited subscription page.
There’s also speculation that Amazon wants publishers to crossover to Kindle Unlimited. Kindle Newsstand may have been profitable, but given that Kindle Unlimited already includes newspaper and magazine subscriptions, it makes sense that Amazon would want to focus on its own subscription service instead. It fits.
But is joining Amazon Kindle Unlimited worth it for publishers? There is a nature. Additionally, some people think Kindle Unlimited subscriptions aren’t worth it, and the move would be a big bet for publishers.
It’s time to change your magazine or newspaper subscription
The news that Amazon is discontinuing the Kindle Newsstand is disappointing. However, Amazon gives you plenty of time to make other arrangements to receive your favorite magazine or newspaper. If it’s available with Kindle Unlimited, it’s an option you can consider. However, if you are unsure which direction to go, consider canceling your subscription. That way, you can take your time weighing your options.
