    Shortly after Donald Trump took office as President of the United States in January 2017, he began piling up conservative judges in federal courts. The team behind HBO Documentary Films’ abortion documentary Jane’s I started making up stories to remind audiences of what happened 50 years ago when women didn’t have access to safe, legal abortion.

    Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Documentary event, filmmaker Emma Pildes said: Pildes co-directed this picture with Tia Lessin.

    Launched in Chicago in the late 1960s and early 70s, The Jane Collective, or simply Jane, was an underground network formed to help women obtain safe abortions when the procedure was illegal. .

    Pildes pointed out that before Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that legalized abortion in 1973, women who decided to have abortions were imprisoned and endangered. .

    “There was a septic abortion ward for women who had voluntary or back alley abortions and were dropped off. Especially when I went to Chicago’s Cook County Hospital, the women almost died,” Pildes said. Told.

    “This was a very witty band of women, young and old coming together,” Lessin said. “They started running a referral service, referring women to vetted doctors who were going to treat them well, and then bringing the doctors home.
