An Israeli missile hit a main air base in Syria’s Homs province on Sunday, killing two servicemen and wounding three, state news agency SANA reported.
According to military sources, the Shayrat air base was recently used by the Iranian Air Force.
Syrian state media posted a short video of the “invasion” and said there were specific losses, but gave no details.
A military source, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said the strike targeted the runway of a sprawling air force base southeast of the city of Homs.
An Israeli military spokesperson declined to comment, but Israel has carried out hundreds of similar attacks since 2017.
Shayrat’s airstrip and underground facilities, including aircraft shelters, have undergone major expansion by the Russian military over the past three years, military sources said.
Russia has troops stationed near Shayrat Air Base and is using the base, security sources say.
Israel has stepped up its attacks on Syrian airports and air bases in recent months in an attempt to thwart Iran’s increasing use of air supply lines to deliver weapons to Lebanese allies in Syria and Lebanon, including Hezbollah. there is
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors such events, said Sunday’s strike destroyed Iranian militia and Hezbollah warehouses at Shayrat Air Base.
Opposition sources say Iranian militias control large swaths of western Homs province near the Lebanese border, and a series of bases in the east.
Israel has launched attacks in Syria for years against what it describes as Iran and Iran-backed forces deployed there during the war that began more than a decade ago.
