[Reuters]- Amazon.com uses patented technology owned by State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company to develop e-commerce giant’s virtual assistant software, Alexa Elder Care Service It did, State Farm said Thursday in a lawsuit in federal court in Delaware.
In its complaint, State Farm said Amazon copied some of Sundial’s senior healthcare assistive technology after a conference about its integration with Alexa.
Amazon declined to comment. Bloomington, Illinois-based State Farm said in a statement that this is the first time the company has filed a patent infringement lawsuit.
According to State Farm, Sundial has a “virtual care hub” where caregivers can connect with seniors living independently. The insurer said it met with Amazon about adapting Sundial to Alexa-enabled devices in 2019 and 2020.
The lawsuit alleges that Amazon has no similar senior care products and “avoided the costly and time-consuming work that would have been necessary to copy State Farm’s pioneering proprietary technology and develop its own innovations.” I saw an opportunity to do it,” he said.
State Farm launched Sundial in June 2020, Amazon launched Alexa Care Hub in November 2020, and launched its Alexa Together subscription service last December, according to the complaint.
The lawsuit accused Amazon of copying technology that included Sundial’s check-in and monitoring features, a “friend circle” for coordinating caregiver responsibilities, and a chatbot for seniors to interact with the platform. I’m here.
State Farm also accused Amazon of adopting an “anti-competitive pattern of behavior” toward its former partners.
“This is just the latest example of Amazon exploiting its broad platform and global scale to siphon innovation from others for its own benefit,” State Farm said.
The case is State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co v. Amazon.com Inc., United States District Court for the District of Delaware, No. 1:22-cv-01447.
