Republican National Committee Chairman Ronna McDaniel said the committee could not continue to cover former President Donald Trump’s legal costs if he announced his candidacy for re-election in 2024. Stated.
McDaniel made comments to Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday morning after the outlet reported that the RNC paid more than $2.3 million in Trump’s legal fees.
“We cannot pay the legal costs of the announced candidates,” McDaniel said. “So these are bills that came out of a lawsuit that started when Letitia James was president. It was a politically motivated investigation, and it was for that reason that the former president’s executive committee said Voted.”
The Chair added: “We can’t make in-kind contributions to any candidate. Now he’s a former president who’s been attacked in lawsuits in every way possible. And he certainly has more than we spent on these bills. He collects a lot in his RNC.”
The Hill has filed a lawsuit from New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is investigating the Trump family for overvaluing their assets, and Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr., who is investigating Trump’s real estate business. RNC reportedly paid Trump’s legal fees.
When Bash asked if Trump would make an announcement soon and if McDaniel wanted him to run, she said she didn’t know, and was “focused only on 2022.”
“My mind can’t even go there. I don’t even know what I’m doing for Thanksgiving right now, let alone 2024,” McDaniel said.
