(Reuters) – Britain will formally declare Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group, which has arrested seven people with ties to Britain over anti-government protests, The Telegraph reported Monday, citing sources.
The move, which will be announced in the coming weeks, is backed by British Security Minister Tom Tugendhat and Home Secretary Suera Braverman, the report said.
Banning Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group means that it would be a criminal offense to belong to the group, attend its meetings, and use its logo in public.
The Home Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Telegraph’s report.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards rebels rocked the country last week after the death of 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian Martha Amini, who was arrested for “improperly dressed” under Iran’s strict Islam. The dress code for the woman who arrested seven people with ties to Britain over the protests.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday urged Iran to stop detaining dual nationals, saying the practice should not be used to gain “diplomatic clout”.
