The first openly gay former British soldier to grace the cover of ‘Soldier’ magazine has spoken out about how Prince Harry protected him from homophobic soldiers.
Harry served in the British Army from 2005 to 2015 and previously said it was “the happiest time of my life”.
James Wharton praised the Prince for taking action when fellow soldiers were teasing Wharton about his sexuality.
The pair served alongside each other in the Household Cavalry, where Prince Harry was a “well-liked” and “good” officer.
According to Wharton, “He knew how to do his job, was skilled, took his time, knew his people and wasn’t afraid to get involved in what was going on.”
The Duke of Sussex was Wharton’s tank commander in 2008, and soldiers said Harry was “quite upset” by their actions and “told them.”
Wharton’s co-workers made him feel “uncomfortable” about his sexuality, and when Harry spoke to them, the problems stopped.

“I told him there were a few soldiers out there who weren’t too happy with the fact that I was gay.”
After Harry talked it over with his co-workers, “the problem was solved.”
