South Los Angeles (KABC) — At least six people were injured when drivers collided at a street carnival in south Los Angeles Saturday night.
The incident was reported at about 8:00 pm on the 3000 block of South Trinity Street near Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Police said they tried to pull over the driver of the white Porsche Cayenne, but he wouldn’t stop him. That’s when he continued driving, plunging through the cement rails and into the street carnival setup.
The driver, who has not yet been identified, attacked at least six people, all between the ages of 30 and 50, police said.
“It was kind of upsetting because he hit some of my guards,” said one witness. “He actually gave one of the guards a concussion and broke his leg.” It shouldn’t have happened.”
A video obtained by Eyewitness News showed several people escaping to safety. Police said all six patients were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said officers found the suspect’s car several blocks away and the person of interest was detained.
“He apparently tried to leave the fair, but barricades prevented him from doing so, so he continued on the westbound MLK, passing through a large group of people estimated at between 1,000 and 2,000. People,” said the sergeant. LAPD’s Robert Leary.
Given how crowded the street fair was, Leary said the results could have been worse.
“I’m glad no one was actually seriously injured,” he said. “I think they heard a car. I think I escaped on time, thankfully.”
It is unknown whether the Cayenne driver was under the influence of any substance or alcohol.
