Outgoing Maryland Governor Larry Hogan on Sunday lashed out at fellow Republicans who remain loyal to former President Donald Trump following a weak performance in the midterm elections.
A Maryland Republican and vehement Trump critic, he, like other Republicans and prominent conservatives, said the Republicans’ failure to retake the Senate and win seats in the House was the original cause. He blamed it on the president.
“It’s basically like three straight elections and three strikes that Donald Trump has cost us the race,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
Hogan, whose term has been set, will leave the governor’s office to replace Trump-backed Republican Dan Cox, who lost 62% to 34.6% to Democrat Wes Moore. refused to support He called Trump an “800-pound gorilla” and advocated for Republicans to rally around other Republican supporters.
With Hogan also considering a White House candidacy, Trump is set to announce his 2024 presidential election on Tuesday.
“I’ve been saying since 2020 that we have to go back to a party that appeals to more people and can win in tough places, like I did in Maryland,” Hogan said. “And I think that lane is a lot wider than it was a week ago.”
