As NPR put it in 2020, “There are rich people, and Jeff Bezos is rich.” donated $174 million in Amazon stock to non-profit organizations.
On November 3 and November 4, 2022, Bezos filed two common stock transactions totaling 1.9 million shares in charitable donations, according to a report from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
As Forbes noted, Bezos has increased his charitable giving since stepping down as CEO of Amazon last year, with most of his charitable giving coming through his Amazon stockholdings. With no capital gains tax restrictions, non-profit recipients can sell their shares at any time.
Bezos’ current net worth is estimated at $112.6 billion, according to Forbes. He still owns about 10% of his Amazon stock worth about $90 billion. Last year, Bezos sold more than $8.8 billion of his Amazon stock, and since taking the company public in 1998, the billionaire has sold his $29 billion worth of his Amazon stock.
For some, Bezos’ philanthropy is highly notable among his peers, but as Forbes noted, some of his fellow billionaires surpass him in this regard. I’m here.
Forbes notes that future donation promises (such as the Bezos Earth Fund’s $10 billion commitment) and “black box” gift deals (transactions to donor-advised funds that do not require a legal “donation” per se) (possibly), but it’s estimated that Bezos donated $2.4 billion to charity in his lifetime.
This may seem like a lot of money, but it’s about the same amount most billionaires give, less than 5% of their personal wealth.
In contrast, Bezos’ ex-wife Mackenzie Scott pledged a hefty sum to Planned Parenthood and the Boys and Girls Club of America.Since 2020, she has donated a total of $12.7 billion has been awarded to more than 1,200 organizations. Scott is listed as one of her nine members of the Forbes 400 and donates over 20% of her wealth to charity.
