Iranian chess player Sarah Kadem competed in the World Blitz Championship on Monday without wearing the head covering Iran requires for women.
The International Chess Federation has posted photos of players from an event held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This included a photo of Kadem looking down at a chessboard with her hair loose over her shoulders.
Kadem is the only Iranian woman to compete in the tournament.
The issue of Iranian women wearing the hijab has become a greater focus in recent months.
In October, rock climber Ernaz Rekavi competed in South Korea without wearing a hijab, drawing the attention of those who saw it as an act of solidarity with anti-government demonstrators.
Upon returning to Tehran after the event, Rekavi told Iranian state television that the competition without a hijab was unintentional.
