TEHRAN – Iran’s National Olympic Committee chairman Mahmoud Koslavi Vafa has spoken of his intention to send athletes with better chances of winning medals at the 2022 Asian Games.
Iran finished sixth at the 2018 Asian Games, winning 20 gold, 20 silver and 22 bronze medals. A total of 378 athletes represented Iran in the competition held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Now, Khosravi Vafa says their policy in Hangzhou is to improve quality and reduce quantity.
“Iran will have a reduced delegation to the 2022 Asian Games, but will send athletes with better chances of winning medals,” Khosravi Vafa said.
“The Iranian delegation is looking for a better place at the Games and the federation should help us reach our goals,” he added.
“We will also have a special look at the women’s athletes at the 2022 Asian Games,” said Koslabi Vafa.
The 19th Asian Games, also known as Hangzhou 2022, is a multi-sport event held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.
Hangzhou will become the third city in China to host the Asian Games, following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.
The competition will run from September 23rd to October 8th, 2023.
