A former Washington, D.C. police officer who was badly injured in the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riots preferred Pennsylvania Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman over Republican opponent Dr. Mehmet Oz. supported.
In a campaign ad for Fetterman, Michael Fannon said Oz aligns with supporters and opponents of former President Donald Trump’s election.
“Mehmet Oz is no ordinary Republican. He is the first president in U.S. history to send his supporters to attack fellow Americans, police officers, in an attempt to overthrow democracy. “I’ve joined hands with Trump,” Fannon said.
He also said that Oz is “not the independent voice he claims to be. He is the voice of Donald Trump and his hateful and violent rhetoric.”

Thousands of mobs descended on the Capitol, Fannon said, “fueled by a lie spread by Donald Trump and his allies and directed by the former president himself to take the fight to the Capitol.” .
Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Fetterman and Oz become embroiled in a senatorial dispute. The pair faced off in their only debate on October 25. Fetterman, who suffered a stroke in May, struggled with effective communication Closed captioning was used because his auditory processing capacity is still limited.
Media giant Oprah Winfrey said Thursday that she supports Fetterman over Oz.
“I am honored to have the support of Officer Fannon, a true American hero who (unlike Oz) believes in supporting democracy,” Fetterman wrote in a tweet accompanying the ad.
Fanone was injured in a Jan. 6 riot when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop Congress from proving Biden’s victory in 2020. A Tennessee man, Albuquerque Cosperhead, was sentenced last month to more than seven years in prison for his involvement in the unrest.

According to prosecutors, Head was involved in some of the most brutal violence during the Capitol riots, repeatedly attacking police officers guarding the Lower West Terrace tunnels.
Fanone was at the forefront of the battle for control of the tunnel entrance when Head grabbed him. He wrapped his arms around Fanone’s neck and dragged him into the crowd outside the tunnel, prosecutors said.
Campaign ads said he suffered a brain injury, had a heart attack, and was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
“He was your prey. He was your trophy,” U.S. District Judge Amy Berman-Jackson told Head before sentencing.
