In February, Dan Snyder reluctantly renamed the Washington Redskins the Commanders. As he considers selling the team, a potential owner plans to return the franchise to its old name.
Best-selling author Nick Adams, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, claims he’s setting up an ownership group to buy the team back to its original name.
“We are putting together an ownership group to acquire the Washington Commanders and change their name back to the Washington Redskins. Updates coming soon,” he tweeted.
Adams believes the decision to change the name was a mistake and that the author gave in to the cries of those who disagreed politically.
Many believed the name should not have been changed, but few would go so far as to buy the team and change the name again – the third name change in four years.
Adams may be genuinely interested in buying Commanders, but he needs a wealthy and powerful friend to pull it off. His net worth is estimated at $1 million to $5 million, not enough to buy a team.
For comparison, Snyder is worth almost $5 billion.
Why did the commander change his name in the first place?
The Redskins have been the mascot of the Washington-based football team since its inception in the 1930s. However, the name was considered offensive to Native Americans, as was the team’s logo.
Many teams have undergone changes in recent years, removing offensive aspects of their mascots, names and logos. I finally gave in.
He was pressured by his sponsor to change because they agreed it was offensive. Initially, the team simply removed the mascot and Washington played football for his team before becoming the Commanders two years later.
In a statement, Snyder said:
“As an organization, we are thrilled to unite and stand together under a new identity while honoring our local roots and what it means to represent the nation’s capital. We pay tribute to tradition, history, heritage and the great people who came before us.”
The statement continued:
“We will continue to honor and represent Burgundy and Gold as we pave the way for a new era in Washington. Today may be the first day of Commander Washington, but we will always be Washington. “
Another name change is unlikely, no matter who buys the team.
