Washington — A Jan. 6 committee in the House of Representatives will withdraw former President Donald Trump’s subpoena to end its work.

In a letter to Trump’s attorneys, Mississippi Democratic Party Chairman Benny Thompson, obtained by CNN, wrote: “Given that our investigation is about to end, the task force no longer has certain specific subpoenas. We cannot pursue information,” he said.
“Therefore, through this letter, I hereby formally withdraw the subpoena issued to former President Trump and notify him that he is no longer obligated to comply or make records in response to such subpoena. I will,” Thompson added.
The committee subpoenaed Trump in October with documents and testimony related to an investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump sued the commission to block his subpoena.
The Commission had already dropped a number of subpoenas related to other witnesses to curtail its work. Still, Trump took advantage of the subpoena’s retraction on his own social media his platforms, saying, “They probably knew I did nothing wrong or they would lose the case in court. I guess that’s why I did it,” he insisted.
The commission closed its investigation by referring Trump to the Justice Department for possible criminal prosecution on four separate charges. However, the Panel’s inquiry has no legal effect. And the Justice Department is already scrutinizing Trump as part of its Jan. 6 investigation and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
A spokesman for the House committee declined to comment.
