Anxious speculation has been building all week ahead of Dave Chappelle’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ host gig.
Since the comedian’s controversial return to the sketch comedy show was announced, NBC and executive producer Lorne Michaels have called out transphobic comments on the Emmy-nominated 2021 special “The Closer.” In light of things, Chappelle faced criticism for putting the spotlight on her. Reports circulated that some “SNL” writers, upset by his comments, were refusing to work with him. These reports were denied by representatives of Chappelle.
So when he appeared on stage while the house band were playing the opening notes of the Otis Redding classic “Try A Little Tenderness” and said they wanted to read a statement, many viewers were undoubtedly in love with him. I was wondering if does address this issue or some other hot issue. Button topic.
Chappelle took a piece of paper from his black leather jacket and read, “I condemn all forms of anti-Semitism and stand with my friends in the Jewish community.” He then took a sharp poke at the rapper formerly known as Kanye West.
“So, Kanye,” he said with a mischievous grin.
The joke was in the opening 14 minutes and also targeted Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving, Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker, and former President Trump.
Aside from a few mild profanities and a few drops of the N-word, Chappelle’s comments were nowhere near as graphic as he expressed in his earlier routine. His monologue received hearty laughter and applause from his live studio audience.
Much of the routine was intended for West, known by his preferred name, Ye.
In his 35-year career, Chappelle said, “I have heard that there are two words in the English language that should never be said together, and those words are ‘the’ and ‘Jews.’ Told. He hasn’t heard anyone do good since he said that. “
Chappelle also ridiculed the rapper for boasting that sportswear maker Adidas wouldn’t drop him for making anti-Semitic remarks. He also mentioned Irving, who was indefinitely suspended by the Nets for posting
“It’s been hard on both Kanye and Kylie,” he later said.
When the comments elicited mild hoops from the audience, Chappelle said, “Thanks to one person who said something.”
Swiping Walker, Chappelle said, “I don’t want to speak ill of him because he’s black, but I have to admit he’s clearly stupid. It’s the kind of guy who looks like he’s thinking ahead…in a tic-tac-toe.”
Trump also asked, “Why did he have all these documents at home? He was famous for not reading press conferences, and now he suddenly has 10,000 documents?” I’ve been laid off from many jobs in my life, and to be honest, when I got fired, I stole stuff from the office…but you know what I never stole from work? work!”
