Deion Sanders arrived in Boulder on Sunday and was officially announced as Colorado’s next head coach.
He has also sent a very clear message to current Buffaloes players.
Sanders has already picked his quarterback (his son, Shedur) and they need to visit the transfer portal.
“These amazing fans, the student body, and what some of your parents have put up with for probably 20 years, couldn’t be more confusing,” Sanders told a room full of Colorado players. So be prepared to jump into the portal and do whatever you can, because the more people jumping in, the more room you have.”
It doesn’t happen very often to hear a coach blatantly suggest they should go out to a room full of players. It’s hard to imagine an entire returning team choosing to move elsewhere, but Sanders’ speech on Sunday certainly pushed at least a few players on the fence over the edge.
He also almost guaranteed that his son, Shedur, who is currently a quarterback at Jackson State University, will lead the team next fall.
Sanders chose to jump to Colorado Saturday night after an undefeated season capped off an impressive three years at Jackson State. He compiled his record of 27 wins and 5 losses, including his 43-24 win in his SWAC title game on Saturday, and he won two of his SWAC championships while at Jackson State University. Won.
The Buffaloes, too, clearly need someone like Sanders to revamp their program. Colorado fired coach Kardrel this fall after his 0-5 start in his third season. The team finished with a 1-11 record. Colorado has only had one winning season to live up to its name since he moved to the Pac-12 conference in 2011.
Colorado’s athletic director, Rick, said, “There were many talented and impressive candidates who were interested in becoming Colorado’s next head football coach, but the pedigree to connect with a student-athlete like Deion Sanders. No one had the knowledge, the ability,” he said. George said. “I am confident that Coach Prime will not only energize our fan base, but will also lead a high-quality, unique team to help restore our program to national prominence.”
George’s plan to restructure the football program around Coach Prime had one small problem.
He hasn’t prepared the money yet.
