Christie said many election naysayers have proven to be “loser” candidates in the 2022 midterm elections.
Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie said Donald Trump “can’t win the general election,” and predicted the former president wouldn’t succeed in the 2024 presidential election.
Republican Christie said on ABC News’ “This Week” that Trump’s chances of winning have “worsened” since the 2020 election.
“He has said many times that he cannot win the general election,” Christie said Sunday. It’s what we’ve seen really happen in the election, and it’s only gotten worse since then.”
Mr Christie said Trump’s situation was worsening following the disappointing loss of some of his hand-picked candidates in the 2022 Republican midterm elections.
“Then add what happened in 2022: Election deniers lost across the country and bad candidates like Pennsylvania’s (Doug) Mastriano lost the entire Pennsylvania ticket in a historic way. It’s trailing Kari Lake, Blake Masters, Tim Michels,” Christie said. “You can go through the whole list of losers, losers, losers, losers, and I think Republicans recognize that.”
Mr Trump has made political visits to New Hampshire and South Carolina since announcing his re-election bid in November and said he was “angrier than ever” and “more committed than ever”.
Citing his unexpected success in 2016, Christie and other commentators on “This Week” said it was too risky to leave the option of Trump’s nomination off the table entirely.
“You have him at the table every minute,” said Christie.
Recent polls showed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis leading Trump in the presidential race, but Trump overruled them, an insider previously reported.
Trump said of DeSantis, “He won’t be in control. I elected him,” referring to major endorsements in 2018 that helped DeSantis rise to political stardom. said: “I chose him.”
