Chicago (CBS) — Protesters in Chicago on Sunday joined forces to raise their voices for the people of Iran thousands of miles away.
Protesters in Chicago spelled out “Free Iran” at a white flag demonstration near Montrose Beach.
At least 14,000 flags were hoisted on the lawn on Sunday afternoon. Each flag represents a prisoner and journalist being held and tortured in prisons across Iran. That number also includes college students, musicians, artists and athletes.
International human rights groups have reported that at least 300 people, including 40 children, have died in protests since Masa Amini’s death.
She died while in the custody of the state morality police for wearing the hijab improperly.
More than 1,000 indictments have been filed against protesters this week. Many of them were sentenced to death.
Iranian Sabah Latifi said: “It’s very simple. We want to liberate Iran. We want justice for everyone. We don’t want much. People support the Islamic regime.” I’m not asking you to stop and accept this revolution for regime change.” .
The Chicago Park District has given activists permission to fly a “Free Iran” flag visible from skyscrapers and passing planes for the next two weeks.
