Bill Maher was in a frequent “religious dip” state of mind on Friday’s “Real Time,” striking both the Catholic Church and his favorite former president, Donald Trump.
It was St. Patrick’s Day and all, and Maher’s new rule began with a shout-out to Ireland, which quickly turned into a political comparison of the current state of the Republican Party and the country’s division over religion.
“[Ireland] It’s been a while since the political hatred that grew out of religion turned into what we call ‘trouble’. Tucker Carlson calls it ‘tourism,'” Maher said, cutting into footage of Trump supporters storming the Capitol on January 6.
“Politics has become our religion,” he continued. “We were praying for our country. Now each side prays that the other side does not destroy our country. I think. On the other hand, Trump’s cult wants to revive it. ”

Maher noted that Trump is often portrayed as a religious warrior of some kind, and he reinforced that image with his word choice.
“Now he’s talking like a doomsday religious maniac,” said the comedian. I am your reward for those who are wronged and betrayed.” Oh, Jesus. Thank you Batman! ‘ Maher added, rolling his eyes.
And what began as a tribute to Pope Francis starting a conversation about ending priestly celibacy has veered to crushing the Catholic Church, which he led.
“A lot of people are super excited to already have an app where they can meet priests. It’s called Grindr,” he said, citing a popular dating app aimed at the LGBTQ community. Maher said.

“But it’s good for Francis,” he continued. “We point out that only after the 11th century did the church require a priest to be ascetic, and when they did, it meant that after the priest died, he would leave money to his children. Instead of leaving it, he was to give it to the church, where he continues to face charges of sexual misconduct against a boy.
