Donald Trump is running for president. But according to a new Quinnipiac University National Poll, many wish he wasn’t there.
Nearly six in 10 Americans (57%) said it would be a bad thing for Trump to run again, and only 34% said it would be a good thing.
Democrat Trump’s numbers to this question, unsurprisingly, are abysmal, with 88% saying it’s a bad thing he started the 2024 White House campaign.
But that’s not what Trump should worry about. What the former president should be concerned about is his numbers among independents (58% said running was a bad thing) and Republicans (27% said it was a bad thing).
A simple fact revealed by the Quinnipiac poll is that a significant portion of the public, not just Democrats, think President Trump’s re-election is a bad idea for the country.
And that’s not the only negative point taken from Trump in the polls. There are some data points that suggest
Six in 10 Republicans said they would love to see DeSantis run for president, while about a quarter said they would not.
When asked who they would choose for the 2024 Republican nomination, 44% of Republicans chose DeSantis. This is the same percentage that chose Trump.
Okay, this is one vote. But data is data. And the data suggests that not only will Trump be undermined as a candidate for the general election (the independents numbers are, um, not good), but the Republican arena will have no one other than the former president. It means that there is room for
As CNN’s Harry Enten recently wrote about Trump:
“He remains a force to be reckoned with in Republican circles, and the news that the Justice Department has appointed a special counsel to oversee investigations related to the former president draws on Trump’s support among Republicans. It’s possible. Nevertheless, it’s clear that his power within the party has waned after the 2022 midterm elections.”
All true! And it’s all a concern for Trump supporters who want to see him as the party’s 2024 candidate.
point: Trump is the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination. But his grip on party and country is clearly loosening.
